The whale

Being home with a flu I recently watched Ric Burns interesting documentary "Nantucket" (trailer here) about the rise and decline of the american whaling industry in the 19th century and started some rough sketches and whale modeling.

As a kid I've been deeply impressed by the 1956 Hollywood adaption of Herman Melville's "Moby Dick", with its amazing visual effects and of course Gregory Peck as the scary Captain Ahab. - Almost automatically these old memorized pictures turned up when I began with the sketches.

> Scary Ahab scene on youtube

But we live in 2013 and after a few rough sketches and some experiments with a paper model (which is still work in progress) I decided to practise my modeling skills in Pixologic's free version of Sculptris Alpha 6, which turned out to be a very fine and intuitive to use 3D tool for beginners.

The models can even be exported as wavefront objects ...

... and then imported into other programs like Blender 3D for further detail work.

Inside the whale :)

Not completely finished yet ...

To be continued ...
