The real island

This and other maps: Elephant Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My blog fellow and muse viti sent me this fine little map of the real Elephant Island today. Thanks to viti and also to Mr. Giovanni Fattori who obviously made the map.

As you can see the shape of the island resembles very much the shape of an elephant head with its two ears and trunk, even more, if you imagine to rotate it clockwise. I didn't thought of this when I made the head logo for the blog, but I was pleased about the coincidence.
Opposed to my own expectation the name of the island doesn't come from the shape, refering to this article on Wikipedia, „its name was given by early explorers sighting elephant seals on its shores.“

Anyway, ... this blog is not about the real Elephant Island and I'm not really living there. I choose this name for many reasons as I live on a very similar island with nice shores, polar bears, seals and penguins. Even stadiums and Stinker Points can be found here, so my island is not as virtual as you may think.
